WELL THAT WAS AN AFTERNOON.
My family arrived at my place and I told them, and this was my mistake, "You're going to have to go down the street, turn around, and pull up to my place so we can unload."
They got stuck in the snow at the end of the street.
Three inches of snow.
In a four wheel drive pickup.
I MIGHT HAVE LOLED. And then spent forty minutes helping push them out.
Anyway, we got my new hideous chair and my bookshelf up to my apartment, took the rest of my stuff to storage, dropped off the U-Haul trailer, and made our way downtown to the hotel. It took us two trips to get all the luggage to the hotel room, because everything my parents brought is in tote bags. Apparently they've sworn off luggage? I don't even know.
But we are here in the hotel now, safe and warm and awaiting room service. We were upgraded, which rocks the house; it means that the room I'm sharing with Emmy is just a room, but if we go next door my parents have a PALATIAL SUITE we can all hang out in.
And, obvs, the internet works.
I'm so glad we have no more moving to do. |

Very delayed reading post (going back several months): Part III Sff Not really all that much in this category, though I think there was a certain amount of re-reading.
Phyllis Gotlieb, Birthstones (2007) - finally got round to this which has been sitting in the pile for some time. Good, but with a touch of worthiness. And a strong suspicion, that Gotlieb, like me, had read one too many (actually, one is too many) sf novels with a species with non-sentient females: and decided to work that out realistically.
Kristin Cashore, Graceling (2008) and Fire (2009), since they were being mentioned all over the place. And were pretty good, and do a lot of the right sort of things, but somehow not (or not yet) in the class of 'major new discovery'. However, will do to be going on with and will probably read her next.
Mercedes Lackey. Foundation: Book One of the Collegium Chronicles(A Valdemar Novel) (2008). Ummmm - readable but formulaic?
Sharon Shinn, Fortune and Fate (2008). Very enjoyable. Not exactly pushing the boundaries of generic tropes, but it's just done very well with engaging characters.
Madeline Howard, A Dark Sacrifice: Book Two of The Rune of Unmaking (2008). Again, not exactly pushing the generic boundaries. I thought this was going to be part 2 of a duology, but turned out to end on a cliffhanger and therefore we're in for at least a trilogy. While I was interested enough in Book One to buy this, I'm not sure I'm going to commit to the longer haul. Not particularly engaged by any of the characters.

[LJ2ME] The next instalment in the flying home saga This morning I set out to the airport again. When I rang the ticket desk on my way, they told me the flight (only one today) was overbooked but put me on standby. 30 mins before they closed check-in they had three seats, four passengers still to arrive and two of us hoping they wouldn't. A third standby passenger arrived during that wait but no one else did, so all three of us (all originally from Sunday evening flight) got on. I was very happy about because it had started snowing which would probably have played havoc with attempts to get on any other flights. We took off about an hour late, so I missed my connection so I'm currently waiting for the next flight which leaves in about two hours. ETA (8.30pm UK time): The last leg and the wait for were uneventful-am at my parents' now. It's -19 degrees Celsius outside. (also edited to tag, crosspost and try to fix the too-long subject line) Crossposted from Dreamwidth at http://queen-ypolita.dreamwidth.org/150702.html where the post has comments. Yuletide and such For those participating in Yuletide who might not have heard, there's a serious problem with Yahoo that's preventing the mod from sending out email for pinch hits. Thanks to those who responded to my post of woe from last week; the kind words and thoughts were appreciated. :) I spent the last week baking in preparation for a family gathering that occurred this past Sunday, and I knitted a hat and a pair of thick house socks, and I wrapped most of my presents. A couple aren't finished yet, and I need to pick up some things either today or tomorrow. I also finished and uploaded my Yuletide story, which is nerve-wracking because I've never done Yuletide before and I haven't written anything out of HP in 2-3 years, but hopefully my recipient will like it. I wasn't going to participate in Yuletide Madness, but I saw a couple of things on the pinch hitter list before Yahoo shut it down that are tempting me. I don't want to commit to do a pinch hit, but if I have the time and energy, I may write something short for Yuletide Madness. Yesterday, I uploaded some late gifts to the Snupin Santa site, so I'm caught up with that. Today is laundry day, and it may turn into errand day this afternoon. Other than a few last-minute gift buying-finishing-wrapping things, I'm ready for the holidays. I think I've finally reached the point where I can sit back, take a deep breath, and relax. I may even venture into looking at the various fest posts again and see what I want to put into my "to read" folder. she knows when and where to strike Random stuff makes a post, yeah? + I got a mix CD in the mail yesterday from spectralbovine! Woo! New music! ♥ - sadly, I had the most godawful headache last night and couldn't listen to it. + The Giants won last night by a large margin and looked competent - dominant even - while doing so. - Unfortunately, it was against the sucktastic Redskins, so it doesn't really prove they can actually win against a good team. + If the Cowboys lose and the Giants win out, the Giants could make the playoffs! + Given the Cowboys' record in December the past few years, this is actually a possibility. - If the Giants can actually win their last two games, which is not anywhere near a given. + I'm glad a lot of people are downloading the music I put up the other night. - I am amused at how few people commented, versus how many download notifications I've received from Box.net. + I downloaded Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) by Florence + the Machine from vonnie_k and OH MY FUCKING GOD WHERE HAS THIS SONG BEEN ALL MY LIFE? NO SERIOUSLY HANDS DOWN THE BEST SONG OF 2009. I mean, I knew "Kiss with a Fist" and I like it, but I didn't seek out anything else by them, and then I downloaded this and it BLEW MY MIND. My mind? Officially blown. Needless to say, I have had it on repeat since Saturday. Also, I keep thinking of the awesome vids people could make! Starbuck! River! Buffy and Faith! Fred! Veronica Mars! You all should TOTALLY make those vids! LISTEN TO THIS SONG, PEOPLE! HAVE I EVER STEERED YOU WRONG? (sorry for the unintentional rhyming.)+ Actually, I wonder about that - I know people don't like to use the same song but has there ever been a multifandom vid challenge where everybody uses the same song and you see all the different ways it could be interpreted? Because I think that could be kind of cool. Someone should totally do that. + If you want to claim a yuletide pinch hit, please read this post. I am not on the mailing list, so I don't know what the procedure has been in the past, but apparently there is a problem, so go read the post. [eta] There is now a backup list for pinch hitters. [/eta]- If I'm understanding this correctly, there is currently no gift listed for me in my AO3 dashboard thingy (and there should be? I am not sure), so + if you do want to pinch hit, you could possibly pick up my requests! Middleman! Gentleman Bastards! Megan Whalen Turner's Thief series! Warlock! There's fun to be had there. I'm just sayin'. + Moff's Law. It's so awesome I am going to quote it in its entirety behind the cut: ( Moff's Law ) *points up* THIS. + Today is my last day in the office until next Monday. \o/ Tomorrow is the day of baking many cakes. And wrapping many gifts. So I just have to make it to 5 pm today and I'm free for five days. Woo! *** This entry at DW: http://musesfool.dreamwidth.org/109954.html. people have commented there. Attention; prospective yuletide pinch hitters; Passing a message on from elynross regarding pinch hits for Yuletide: Apparently Yahoogroups has changed some policy, and the wave of pinch hits sent out has DISABLED MY YAHOO ACCOUNT. I can't post to it to tell the pinch hitters why I'm not responding to claims. Of the 20+ groups I belong to or own, only 3 are displaying, presumably because the rest are on the email address that has been disabled. I... am not a happy camper.
At this point, I need to sleep, and there's very little I can do about this. If you want to claim a pinch hit, you'll need to *forward* or otherwise get the info to my personal email (elynross@gmail.com), and I'll work with that, and try and respond when I get up in a few hours.
Please boost the signal on this, to try and reach other people on the pinch hit list. I'm not sure how the second half of the pinch hits are going to go out, but we'll figure something out. Long Night's Vigil -- Catt Kingsgrave The wagon draws up to the Forge of the Maker Thrice the Dark Man sets his hand to the door "You're needed, Bright Lady," he cries o'er the threshold, "As you have been needed so often before!" And in the last light of the shortest day's ending The Maker, the Midwife with hair like the snow And eyes like the spring heeds the Cartier's summons And takes her bright flame with the Sun down below.
While we in the world where the darkness has gathered Give light to the fire we shall tend until dawn, And offer the cup unto all who come knocking For all here are kindred till morning comes on. In the long Hallow, our Mother she labours To bring forth the Sun and give birth to the year With Fire for midwife and Shadow for lover While we keep the vigil in merry good cheer.
We sing our Wassails to the Kings of the Seasons; The Oak and the Holly, the Robin and Wren, Remember the stories of triumph and treason, And how that which falls will arise once again. The old year gives way for the birth of another, Some hopes we may cherish, while others we'll mourn For life is a gift from a generous Mother And out of her labours are all futures born.
Ere long the sky shivers from ebon to pewter, The dancers gone clumsy, the singers like crows; We'll stir the Yule fire to mighty last blaze And we'll offer our prayers for all good things to grow Then when the sky lightens from silver to amber We'll stagger outside where our breath steams the cold, Climb high as we may and stretch arms to the day For the dark is turned back in that first kiss of gold.
Let all who have gathered give thanks to our Lady, Let all raise their glass to Her labours this night Then settle like coals as the last flames are fading, And sleep for awhile in the Infant King's sight.
-- Catt Kingsgrave
So apparently my Solstice Present showed up tonight. While I was in the bathtub. Yyyeah. She's a sense of humour on her, does my Lady, and I'm sure it was amusing watching me try to keep my ink and bathwater separate while my couplets were overflowing.
As should be obvious from the VERY rigid scansion of this, it's a song rather than a poem. And yes, it came with a tune, but seeing as how I can compose just fine, but can't write music for shite, the singing of it will have to be a hypothetical thing until such time as I can lay hands on a halfway decent USB mic, and commit it to electrons. For the short term, it could be sung to the tune of The Bells of Paradise in a pinch and come out just fine, if a little repetitive.
Slainte, all my Witchkin, and Happy Solstice to you all! |

I kept meaning to make an LJ entry today, and then things kept happening in my brain, you don't even want to know. So instead, you get a list! 1. While my knee is healing rapidly (I'm a good healer, to make up for tripping on NOTHING, ALL THE TIME) I've had to shorten my gait, so it takes me like, five minutes longer to get EVERYWHERE. This is improving my balance however. 2. The slow-walking thing is why I'm glad that the mailman came to see me today and took the last of my Christmas mailings, because omg I did not want to walk to the post office. 3. Which in turn means I can get a cab home. Ooooooh. And clean the kitchen in preparation for The Arrival Of My Family. 3a. Five bucks says that the first thing Emmy says to me when she sees the collage I made of images you guys sent me is, "Why is there a naked man with a frying pan in the corner?" I'm going to just have to tell her "Art is its own explanation" or something equally ridiculous because I often ask myself the same question, and have yet to find an answer beyond "It was there." |

Very delayed reading post (going back several months): Part I Litfic E H Young, The Vicar's Daughter (1928). I am carefully rationing out my E H Youngs, I think I have one more to go, although there are a couple of early ones that are said to be a bit atypical, also hard to get hold of as never Viragoed. This one was up to the usual standard - complex familial interactions, piercing sharp insights, and a twist in the tail of the plot.
Kate O'Brien, The Last of Summer (1943). I'm also currently reading Pray for the Wanderer, written slightly earlier, which has a similar plot involving someone with Irish (specifically, 'Mellick') connections but who has been living in a more cosmopolitan milieu, coming to family whom they have either never met (The Last of Summer), or have long been away from (Pray for the Wanderer). In both cases the setting is contemporary rather than set back into the past (or abroad, as in Mary Lavelle), and, while they're good, and readable, and have many excellences, I wonder if giving a bit of distance in time and space did benefit O'Brien. Of the two, I think The Last of Summer deals with similar issues rather more successfully.
Elizabeth Taylor, Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont (1975). Very well-written, rather depressing, but not as depressing as it might have been - the ending came as a surprise. I am encouraged to try more Taylor, having rather bounced off her in earlier readings.
Barbara Hambly, Homeland: A Novel (2009). I'm not sure that the words 'epistolary novel set during the American Civil War' would normally tempt me to a book, but, well, it's Hambly, and I was not disappointed. Letters between two women, one, in the North, whose husband has left to fight for the South, one in the South who had been going to study art in Philadelphia before this became impossible. Gritty, realistic, gets the voices and the hesitations and the elliptical and oblique communications. Wonderful.
Rumer Godden, The Battle of the Villa Fiorita (1963). Picked up in a secondhand bookshop - I'd read it years ago and hated it rather (it's probably right at the bottom of Goddens I'd recommend anyone to read) but thought I might give it another go. I had to give up. Too much character torture.
Josephine Elder, Lady of Letters (1949, recently reissued by Greyladies). This had its moments and its points - I mark it up for having a relationship between two women which, although not without its tensions and difficulties, is not seen as pathological and is presented as mostly nurturing and benign - but I'm not sure I like it as much as The Encircled Heart, to which it is possibly a bit of companion piece. Again, it's intriguing as much as social history - the world of girls' schools and provincial universities - as anything.
Plus a few other things I've previously posted about.

This is a dreadful week... I've been seeing far too many sad stories on my f'list recently (and one of them - about Brianna Lacey, a missing 15 year old from Chicago needs all the signal boosting it can get), but this story hits far too close to home... We learned yesterday that schadenkatze, someone I've known through fandom for more than a dozen years, lost her life to in a house fire early Sunday morning. Her twin schaden_freude (another long-term friend, and someone who had suffered a major loss not so many years ago), was only able to help their elderly mother from the home the three shared. The house itself and almost everything it contained was, as you might imagine, a great loss, but the loss of her twin sister is...unimaginable. *** From the Springfield News-Leader: Three people in the home -- a mother in her 80s and two daughters -- were asleep when the fire began. Scott said the deceased -- one of the daughters -- died from smoke inhalation... The mother was in serious condition at St. John's Hospital. The other daughter was not reported injured. *** Through the end of the month, lunaris1013 is taking up a collection on behalf of the Seacouver Social Club (a group formed via alt.tv.highlander during the days when much of fandom centered on newsgroups). I am only too aware that times are difficult for so many people, but if you can afford to donate anything at all, paypal links can be found on Dreamwidth and LiveJournal. And if you can't afford to donate, good thoughts for her mother's recovery would be more than welcome. A Holiday Message for Some Special People... It's almost the end of another year and I know I don't like to start a new year with the thought that I have debts hanging over my head. I've contacted a few of you personally. But to be honest, I'm sure there are others of you I've forgotton because my memory is not what it once was, so I'm posting here. If anyone owes me something from a charity auction or from a commission I paid for, as of today, you don't owe me anything. We're starting the new year with a clean slate. Especially for the auctions, I donated that money for a reason and was happy to do so. And I'll do it again. But, please, don't feel this is something still hanging over your head. No worries, no problems. You don't owe me a thing. Happy holidays! |

watch me try to breathe again It's fairly quiet at work today, so if anyone needs a quick last-minute yuletide beta and thinks I might be reasonably familiar with the fandom they're writing in, feel free to drop me a note at victoria.p @ gmail with the fandom and I will tell you yea or nay. I uploaded on Saturday and have been procrastinating on Broken Toys ever since. Heh. What kind of Max/Alec story would you make me write, if you could? This morning I updated unfitforsociety because I figure the next big update will be with yuletide stories, but it's possible people are looking for things to read right now. So unfitforsociety has been updated with 20 recs for December 2009: * 8 Supernatural* 4 Crossovers* 2 Star Trek Reboot* 2 White Collar* 1 each Being Human, Bones, Dark Angel, and Friday Night Lights*** I'm kinda wishing I'd just taken today and tomorrow off. It's a short week, but meh, this weather makes everything more difficult (stupid slushy corners and four foot piles of snow on the sidewalks). Maybe I will work on the year-end writing meme thingy. Boosting the signal for a missing child in Chicago... As seen here: http://shadesong.livejournal.com/4026081.html?mode=replykarnythia says: " This is my son's cousin. She may have run away, but we don't know that for sure. The police are treating her as a runaway so there is no Amber Alert. If you have seen this girl and have any information please contact the Chicago police at (312)747-8274. Or if you are just willing to spread the link, please feel free to do so. She's a kid and we're worried about her. Thank you." Pass it around, and Chicago folks, be on the lookout! |

[LJ2ME] Stuck at the airport My flight should be about to take off in a couple of minutes but it has been delayed until after nine. At least it hasn't been cancelled yet. And I packed all my books (3) in my handluggage. And assuming this post actually posts, I've discovered that this mobile app works 1) for dw and 2) on my phone. ETA (21 December): We got another two delays (until 22:10 and 23:30), a period of airport closure and the incoming flight being diverted to Liverpool. End result: cancelled flight and promises of fitting us in on today's flight(s). But that didn't work, both flights were fully booked, so they're hoping to get us in on tomorrow or day after if they can get bigger aeroplanes, or reroute us. Thought I'd rather hang around waiting at home, so took the train back. Also edited to crosspost.
